Volunteer Treasurer Trustee

Dorset Scrapstore is looking for a volunteer Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees.

We are an established charity of over 25 years, that inspires creativity, supports our community and promotes environmental sustainability by giving new life to surplus materials. Having recently moved into larger premises, we are entering an exciting new chapter, expanding our membership, developing new workshops and events, and growing our impact across Dorset.

As Treasurer, you will play a key strategic role in helping the Board oversee the charity’s financial health. Working alongside our Business Manager, fellow trustees and external accountants, you’ll help ensure sound financial governance while supporting the charity’s continued development.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Financial, bookkeeping or accountancy experience.

  • Good financial awareness and the ability to explain financial information clearly.

  • An interest in good governance and supporting the work of a local charity.

  • A collaborative approach and willingness to contribute at Board meetings.
     

Previous trustee experience is welcome but not essential. If you have financial expertise and would like to use your skills to benefit your local community, we’d love to hear from you.

Role Description

Time commitment:

~4-8 hours a month, including meetings.   

Location:

Working from home, occasional visits to Scrapstore as necessary, and attendance at Trustee Meetings.

Board Meetings:

 Monthly meetings held at Dorset Scrapstore

Summary:

 

  • Monitor the financial standing of the charity (income and expenditure, comparison with budgets, compliance with financial laws and regulations).

  • Advise the Board of Trustees on financial matters.

  • Report to the Trustees regarding cash-flow, income and expenses, and other financial concerns.

  • Act as a signatory for payments and applications to funders. 

  • Ensure that annual accounts are submitted to all relevant regulators in a timely fashion.

  • Liaise with our payroll provider about monthly salaries and independent examiner about annual accounts. 

  • Advise Board on responsible financial management and investment for the betterment of the charity’s work.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Authorising online payments and other online bank functions.

  • Ensuring strategic plans are financially sound, and budgets align to short, medium, and long-term objectives.

  • Overseeing planning/budgeting processes.

  • Explaining technicalities of accounts in plain language for the trustees and management.

  • Leading the Trustee’s duty to ensure proper accounting records are kept.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a wide knowledge of accountancy.

  • Be a competent user of IT (online banking, spreadsheets, Xero accounting software, etc.)

  • Have excellent communication, analytical and evaluation skills.

  • Understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of charity fundraising and financial practices.

  • A team-oriented approach to problem solving and to management. 

  • An interest in artistic and creative skills, abilities and needs.

  • An understanding of environmental issues, especially  ‘the 3 Rs’ -   Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Training and Support:

​We are looking for a Trustee to join and develop our small Board of Trustees. Our new Treasurer will be able to develop systems and working practices. A thorough handover of our current recording system will be given.  Dorset Scrapstore will aim to provide opportunities for personal development within the role.
